In Italy, April 25th is a national holiday celebrating the country’s liberation from Nazi occupation in 1945.
Although it is quite chilly in Cortona, the band marched through the streets and placed a wreath at the statue dedicated to those who fought and died for freedom.
An important day to remember, especially for those of us who love being in Italy.
Ciao,
Judy
Is that statue in the Parterre? If so, I did not realize the significance in my daily walks but now, from your terrific photo I clearly see the WW2 helmet on the figure being taken up to heaven. It brings tears to my eyes.
We are moving this year.
In packing i came across my uncle’s medals from WW2. He was in the Canadian army as part of the Allies that liberated Italy from the south. Included in his memorabilia is a hand-made bracelet sold to those GIs by Italians and probably made from shell casings. Each link memorializes their hard-won advances – Naples, MonteCasino, Rome etc.
Now that I have seen this statue I will see if I can unpack it before we return to Cortona so I can wear it on my visits to the statue. It deserves a visit back.
(He also brought back a hand made Italian wooden doll for me which sadly did not survive the rough love of a three year old.)

Yes, it is. I think the best view is from the side, where you can clearly see these moving figures. So interesting about your bracelet; I look forward to seeing it!
